Description

This publication takes a look at Natura 2000 sites in the Maltese Islands and why they are special for nature. Natura 2000 is a network of the top natural sites in the European Union. Due to their ecological value these sites are protected in a way that human activity within them has the least possible negative impact. As an EU member, Malta too contributes to this network of protected areas, with no less than 48 Natura 2000 sites. These include 34 sites on land and 14 marine sites, and their status as Natura 2000 sites ensures protection of the diverse habitats and the flora and fauna that depend on them. It is an ideal resource for secondary school students and for teachers participating in BirdLife Malta’s Dinja Waħda education programme which aims to connect young people with nature and Post għan-Natura can serve as a valuable resource for Geography, Environmental Studies, Science and Maltese.
