Waders Day at Għadira

February 29, 2024 4:48 pm

Date: Saturday, 16 March 2024
Time: 10:00–16:00
Location: Għadira Nature Reserve

March has arrived, marking the beginning of the wader migration season!

In the enchanting realm of waders, we find a diverse cast of feathered characters: encompassing herons, flamingos, egrets, spoonbills, storks, and ibises – you know these ones for sure! Their long legs, toes, and curved bills are all masterfully adapted for life in shallow waters.

But the world of waders extends beyond these names: the delicate Little Stint, the ubiquitous Common and Wood Sandpipers, the elegant Green Sandpiper, the striking Black-Winged Stilt, the vibrant Redshank, the graceful Avocet, the charismatic Oystercatcher…all of them have been seen at our nature reserves. And the symbol of Għadira Nature Reserve, the Little Ringed Plover, even calls Għadira its home.

Explore more about these incredible birds by joining our event at Għadira on 16th March 2024. This will be the third event in a series of monthly themed events happening at our nature reserves throughout the new year. During the day, feel free to ask any questions and delve into the world of waders — learn how to identify them, discover their habitats, understand their calls, and much more!

Event Highlights:

  • Birdwatching: An activity that demands patience and attention, promising the reward of new sightings!
  • Nature Scavenger Hunt: A challenge for all ages — hunt for bird items prepared by our dedicated team.
  • Educational Games and Quizzes: Dive deep into waders’ habits and adaptations through interactive and entertaining activities.
  • Creative Station: Show your creativity and imagination and add some good-looking creatures to Għadira’s visitor center.

The event unfolds during our nature reserve’s regular weekend opening hours, from 10 am to 4 pm. Participation is free, and no registration is required. A limited number of binoculars will be available for an enhanced birdwatching experience.

While we can’t promise a spectacle of thousands of shorebirds, we guarantee an opportunity to expand your knowledge about waders and engage in exciting activities led by our knowledgeable visitor assistants.

Save the date and be part of this enriching experience at Għadira, where you’ll delve into the intricacies of shorebirds — their habitats, diets, habits, and more!
