Date: Sunday, 1 November, 2026
Location: Simar Nature Reserve
Time: 10:00- 16:00; Open hours of the reserve
This World Ecology Day, we’re opening Is-Simar for a day of exploration, challenges, and hands-on learning about the relationships that keep an ecosystem alive.
Ecology comes from the Greek words oikos, meaning “home”, and logos, meaning “study”. In other words, ecology is the study of our home, and there is no better place to explore it than inside a living wetland.
Throughout the day, visitors can take part in three self-guided activities at their own pace:
💡 Greener Simar
Walk through the reserve and look at it through the eyes of an ecologist. What could we do better for water, wildlife, waste, or visitors? Choose one thing you think could make Is-Simar more environmentally friendly and add your idea to our community board.
♻️ Reuse It!
Can something have more than one purpose? Take a closer look at simple fallen natural objects and challenge yourself to think of as many ways to reuse them as possible. Compete with the imagination of others.
🧩 Crack the Greek
Become a nature-word detective. Pick a challenge card, find the correct Greek root cards, and combine them to reveal familiar scientific words. Once you solve a word, see whether you can connect it to something you can actually observe around ISimar.
The activities are self-guided, so there is no fixed starting time. Arrive anytime during the event, explore the reserve, and take part in whichever challenges interest you.
BirdLife Malta staff will be around to help, answer questions, and point you towards some of the wildlife and ecological relationships happening around you.
This event is open to everyone, and no booking is needed! Just bring yourself and your family, and enjoy observing the ecological wonders of Malta.
