All birds deserve our attention! That’s why we are inviting you to join our Coot Day at Simar Nature Reserve.
Striking black plumage, white frontal shield, and vibrant red eyes make this bird an unmistakable one. Common Coots are expert swimmers with lobed toes for graceful gliding and powerful legs for impressive underwater foraging. The Coot (Tiġieġa tal-Baħar in Maltese) is a fascinating bird that is often overlooked and underestimated.
Learn more about this bird by joining our event at Simar on the 14th of January 2024. This will be the first in a series of themed monthly events we will be holding at our nature reserves during this new year. All day you can ask any questions to discover more about Coots: what they like to eat, what does their call sound like, how and where they raise their chicks and more!
- Join our Nature Bingo: explore the reserve and find diverse, interesting species along the nature trail!
- Participate in a Coot-counting competition: grab your binoculars and join our birdwatchers! Spot Coots in their natural habitat and put your name on the winner board.
- Get answers to your questions about these birds during the All day Coot explanation: our visitor assistants will tell you more interesting facts about Common Coots, their habits, diet, migratory and breeding patterns!
The event will be on during our nature reserve opening hours, between 10am and 4pm. Participation is free, and no registration is needed. A limited number of binoculars will be available.
So save the date and join us at Simar to find out more about these beautiful creatures – their habitat, diet, habits and more!
