Education

Through environmental education, BirdLife Malta strives to connect children, youths and adults with nature. We work to generate understanding and respect for the environment, and to inspire change in people’s behaviour towards sustainable lifestyles.

BirdLife Malta’s education programmes reach thousands of students across Malta and Gozo

BirdLife Malta has published its Education and Public Engagement Annual Report for the 2024–2025 scholastic year. The report highlights three decades of sustained investment in environmental education across Malta and Gozo.

At the centre is Dinja Waħda, BirdLife Malta’s flagship education programme, launched in 1994. 2024 marked its 30th anniversary, confirming its long-term role within the national education system.

During the year, more than 6,000 students visited BirdLife Malta nature reserves for structured learning experiences. These visits took place at Simar, Għadira, Foresta 2000 and Salina Nature Reserve.

A major milestone was the official accreditation of Dinja Waħda by the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education. The programme now offers MQF Level 1 and Level 2 awards for early years and primary students.

BirdLife Malta also launched a new online Dinja Waħda platform for schools. The platform simplifies activity tracking, reporting and access to free educational resources.

Innovation featured strongly, including Malta’s first bird-table live-feed camera installed in a school. The initiative allows pupils to observe birds in real time from inside their classrooms.

Teacher support remained a priority, with extensive in-school visits, training events and online courses. Over 200 educators completed certified online nature-based learning programmes during the year.

Beyond schools, BirdLife Malta reached over 11,000 people through community events and public activities. Youth engagement continued through Nature Guardians, the Young Birders Club and Falko.

The report also documents policy work, research publications and new educational resources.
Together, these efforts strengthen environmental literacy and long-term conservation outcomes in Malta.
