Volunteering opportunities

Position: Communication Assistant
Duration: 1st April 2026 – 31st March 2027 (12 months)

DEADLINE: 11th January 2026 at 23.00 CET time

Are you passionate about nature, communications, and creativity? BirdLife Malta is looking for a Communication Assistant to join our Public Engagement team through the European Solidarity Corps (ESC). This is a great opportunity to develop your communication skills while helping raise awareness about Malta’s birds and natural environment.

You’ll support our work by:

  • Managing and updating BirdLife Malta’s website and monthly blog
  • Creating engaging posts and videos for Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, X, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube
  • Producing monthly newsletters via Mailchimp and contributing to our quarterly magazine
  • Assisting with press releases, media outreach and project campaigns
  • Monitoring online and media coverage and compiling monthly reports

We’re looking for someone with a good command of English, proficiency in Mailchimp, and an interest in nature and environmental issues. Experience with WordPress and social media is a plus.

Position: Seabird Conservation Assistant
Duration: 21st January 2026 – 20th January 2027 (12 Months)

DEADLINE: 3rd November 2025 at 23.00 CET time

The Seabird Conservation Assistant will take an active role within BirdLife Malta’s Seabird Conservation team, supporting a wide range of conservation tasks both on land and at sea. Please note that a large component of this role is fieldwork-based, including evening and weekend work.

The volunteer will assist with research, conservation, and public awareness work at various Natura 2000 seabird colony sites and at the BirdLife Malta office. Duties include:

  • Monitoring seabird colonies: ringing and taking measurements (under local licence), nest monitoring, call registrations at night and colony searches (often involving rope access and abseiling cliffs, even at night)
  • Conducting sea surveys of seabird colonies by boat and kayak, including night work
  • Assisting with outreach and questionnaires with fishermen
  • Supporting predator management (biosecurity and rat control)
  • Engaging with boat users to raise awareness and support biosecurity efforts
  • Participating in public awareness activities on seabird conservation, including events, talks, and outreach at colony sites
  • Inputting, processing and analysing collected data (Excel, ArcGIS, R)
  • Assisting in report preparation
  • Supporting the update of media content on BirdLife Malta’s website, newsletters, blogs and social media
  • Helping organise stakeholder meetings, events, and workshops
