Date: Sunday, 12 April 2026
Time: 08:00-12:00
Location: Għadira Nature Reserve

Join us for a celebration of spring migration!

Mid-April is the perfect time to observe a variety of bird species as they pass through Malta on their migration journey. Għadira, a thriving wetland habitat, serves as a crucial stopover, offering shelter to many birds on their way to their breeding grounds.

We invite you to a public bird ringing session, where you’ll get a rare chance to see this essential research process up close. Bird ringing is one of the central methods for studying bird populations, tracking migratory pathways, and many other aspects of bird ecology. Ringing demonstrations will take place throughout the event without a fixed schedule.

Since this time is the most diverse in terms of species, you have a chance to see many different species of birds, such as hirundines, flycatchers and warblers being ringed and waders and herons out on the wetland.

Experienced birdwatchers will be present to help you spot birds from our bird hide – binoculars and telescopes will be made available but if you have your own you are encouraged to bring them.

In addition to bird ringing, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in an interactive scientific activity – use a unique bird ID number to uncover fascinating details about your assigned species!

The reserve will be open until 16:00, but bird ringing will conclude by noon, as bird activity decreases later in the day.

The event is open to all and completely free! However, registration is required. Please fill out a spearate registration form for each participant.

Don’t miss this chance to witness the wonders of migration and get hands-on with bird conservation!
