July 30, 2025 1:22 pm

Salt Fest 2025 was a great success, drawing a strong turnout to Salina Nature Reserve over two days. The event, held on 26 and 27 July, celebrated nature, culture and the history of this unique site in the Maltese Islands.

Popular salt pan tours and Salt Museum visits

The highlights of Salt Fest included guided salt pan tours, followed by visits to the Salina Salt Museum. These activities were in high demand and due to their popularity, additional tours were added beyond what was initially planned. These special salt pan tours can only take place at this time of year, when no migratory birds are present at the reserve.

Sustainably harvested salt for sale

Visitors also had the opportunity to purchase sea salt sustainably harvested from Salina. Many left with a bag of this local salt, collected by BirdLife Malta with great respect for nature. This salt remains available for purchase at Salina Nature Reserve, which is open daily between 8am and 6pm.

Children’s activities and book launch

Families enjoyed a range of interactive and educational environmental activities designed especially for children. These included workshops, games and sessions that kept young visitors engaged.

During Salt Fest, BirdLife Malta launched a brand-new series of Maltese-language illustrated books for children, inspired by the wildlife in the reserves it manages:

  • Kiljan u Selina fis-Salina
  • Lozza u Martinu fis-Simar
  • Manu u Ava fl-Għadira

Children attended storytelling sessions, and many families purchased copies of these educational books. They remain available at Salina Nature Reserve for €5 each, or the full set for €12.50.

Giving a voice to nature

Salt Fest also offered an opportunity for people to give a voice to nature, with many becoming new members of BirdLife Malta.

A showcase of nature, culture and community

This celebration of nature, culture and history hosted stalls by local artisans and other NGOs working to protect Malta’s natural environment and cultural heritage.

Organised by BirdLife Malta, Salt Fest 2025 highlighted the ecological and cultural value of Salina. With growing interest each year, it has become a cherished fixture in Malta’s summer cultural calendar.
