Date: Saturday, 8 February
Time: 8:00 – 16:00
Location: Għadira Nature Reserve Wetland
Wetlands play a critical role in supporting a wide range of biodiversity and maintaining many natural cycles. They help purify water, control floods, and provide habitats for a diversity of plants and animals, all while supporting local livelihoods.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2nd February to raise global awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and the planet.
BirdLife Malta is proud to manage three of the largest Maltese wetlands – Għadira, Simar, and Salina! Għadira, the first nature reserve in Malta, opened in the 1980s. On Saturday, 8th February, we’re hosting an open day at this wetland area to showcase its unique ecosystem.
This is also the second event in our series of monthly themed activities being held at our nature reserves throughout the year. Don’t forget to bring your nature passport and collect your stamp to work toward your prize at the end of the year!
The day will include:
Bird Release: Celebrate the end of the hunting season (31st January) with us! From 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM join the release of rehabilitated birds from our rehabilitation centre. Witness this extraordinary moment up close as these birds return to the wild!
- New Birdwatching Hide: Visit the newly built birdwatching hide, now offering more space and improved accessibility with no stairs or barriers.
- Family Activities: Test your skills by identifying birdcalls and exploring plant species typical of wetlands!
- New Għadira Cartoon: Check out our latest cartoon! Choose your favourite character and try to spot it while strolling around the reserve.
- Meet the Experts: Throughout the day, our experienced BirdLife Malta staff and volunteers will be available to answer your questions about wetlands and their vital role in our environment.
This free event is perfect for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone looking to enjoy a beautiful day outdoors while learning about wetlands. Don’t forget to bring your nature passport to collect your stamp for the chance to win a prize at the end of the year!
The event is free, but if you want to participate in bird release please register on the Google Form.
