BirdLife Malta council members and CEO, Mark Sultana, recently met with the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in Castille, during which the Prime Minister was given an overview of the work that BirdLife Malta has done and its vision for the future years. It also highlighted the many ways the organisation works closely with the authorities in areas such as enforcement in the field and education.
BirdLife Malta also discussed the derogations applied for spring hunting and trapping and how these practices still remain a key issue of concern for BirdLife Malta
During the meeting, BirdLife Malta highlighted that since the referendum last year, European Turtle-doves have now been recognised as an endangered species on the IUCN international red list. This worrying trend shows the detrimental impact spring hunting continues to have on Europe’s wildlife.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat agreed that more steps need to be taken with Turtle Dove hunting in spring and that he looked forward to continuing to work with BirdLife Malta in the future.
