Children raise funds for Malta’s breeding swifts

80 children today took part in a sponsored marathon walk from Rabat to Qrendi, donating €1,121 towards the construction of Swift (Rundun) nest boxes to be put up in various localities across Malta and Gozo.

BirdLife Urges European Commission to take action against Malta

BirdLife’s European partners today urged the European Commission to take action against Malta, should the Maltese government announce its decision to open yet another spring hunting season putting tens of thousands of migratory birds en-route to their European breeding grounds at peril.

Study shows increase in finch numbers

A study by the EU LIFE+ Project on Bird Migration and Trapping revealed that the number of finches (Għasafar tal-għana) recorded in the Maltese countryside increased dramatically in the first year of the trapping ban in 2009, compared to 2008 when finch trapping was still permitted.

Recommendations to clamp down on illegal hunting to be re-submitted to the Prime Minister

An updated report outlining BirdLife’s recommendations to clamp down on the ongoing and widespread illegal hunting and trapping in the Maltese islands will be re-submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister on Monday, BirdLife Malta revealed today. Although it has been more than one and a half years since the submission of the original report, BirdLife Malta has not yet received feedback from the OPM.

School children celebrate World Wetlands Day at Nature reserves

Malta and Gozo’s schoolchildren are this week visiting the Għadira and Is-Simar nature reserves for a special educational tour to celebrate World Wetlands Day, an activity organised by BirdLife Malta and Bank of Valletta’s education programme Dinja Wahda.
